Shaun Higginbotham

Founder and Managing Director

Shaun started his career in costs in 1988 with a local firm of Law Costs Draftsmen until joining a large regional firm of solicitors in 1990 where he ultimately became the Head of Costs and lead Costs Advocate. During this period, Shaun acted in all manner of Costs matters including the HIV multi-party litigation. 

 

In 1995, he founded SPH Costing Services and attracted a client base who appreciated his commercial and pragmatic approach to costs. He also dealt with all of the firm’s advocacy and was described by a District Judge as "exceptionally competent and sound".

Shaun qualified as an Associate (AALCD) in 1994 and subsequently as a Fellow (FALCD) of the Association of Law Costs Draftsmen, before qualifying in the first tranche of Costs Lawyers to be admitted in July 2007. He has over 34 years of experience in the Costs Industry and is a former Tutor for the  Association of Law Costs Draftsmen. He has vast experience of costs and has overseen the successful processing of tens of millions of pounds of Solicitors’ fees in all manner of civil cases. A hands-on leader with a passion for providing economic and effective costs solutions to a wide range of key stakeholders in the Legal Industry.

Andrew began working in the Costs Industry in the Midlands in 1993 and, following joining SPH Costing Services in 1998, qualified as an Associate (AALCD) in 2002 and then as a Fellow (FALCD) in 2004 of the Association of Law Costs Draftsman, before also qualifying in the first tranche of Costs Lawyers to be admitted in July 2007.

Throughout his career, Andrew has accumulated a wealth of experience in conducting costs claims for both paying and receiving parties and, further, has represented clients as an Advocate on in excess of 2,500 Detailed Assessments, Appeals, and associated hearings from the County Courts, through the Court of Appeal and to the Supreme Court.

 

Andrew is available to accept instructions in respect of all areas of costs law, although currently focusses predominantly in the areas of cost budgeting and between the parties civil assessments. Furthermore, he regularly acts for Local Authorities and various Constabularies nationwide, together with acting as an Independent Expert providing reports to assist the High Court and District Registries in the approval of costs in high value, catastrophic injury cases.

Andrew is an Accredited Training Provider through the Costs Lawyers Standards Board (CLSB).

Prior to joining SPH, he spent nearly 10 years as a Claimant personal injury lawyer before moving into the world of costs in 1996. He became Chief Executive of a major costs company, predominantly being a service provider to leading insurers. He moved to SPH in 2007.

 

He now deals with many of our Clinical Negligence cases for Claimants and is regularly instructed by Defendant local authorities on their personal injury and housing disrepair claims. However, he also brings his vast experience to bear on all manner of civil claims for either side and is one of our key Advocates on all types of costs hearings. Andrew deals with all aspects of civil costs including Bill drafting, Budget preparation, negotiations (on Budgets and more generally), together with preparation of Points of Dispute and Replies.

Alison joined SPH in 2009 and is a Costs Lawyer & Director based in our Leyland office.

Alison has worked in the costs industry since 1993. She has extensive experience in preparing both Bills and Budgets in complex and high-value Personal Injury, Clinical Negligence, and Industrial Disease matters. She has particular expertise in preparing bills where Case Management orders have been made in the Multi-Track. 

She also has an extensive Court of Protection & Legal Aid costs practice and assists our clients on a daily basis in this area.
